In the Desert Southwest Conference, a new model for Sunday School and outreach is taking place. Director of Outreach Ministries, Ms. Billie Fidlin, oversees this program and has been an instrumental participant as well.
The Sidewalk Sunday School Ministry seeks to teach the fundamentals of Christianity to urban children and their families. The message is one of "Hope for the future."
In a typical model, a box truck such as a U-Haul is converted to be a portable platform church. On the truck is the sound system, storage for supplies, workspace and anything else that may be needed for a worship service on the go.
Worship is held weekly and is "high energy" including music, drama, Bible object lessons and stories, games, prizes prayers, etc. Volunteers who conduct the worship seek to be innovative in their approach in communicating the weekly Biblical theme.
The volunteers travel to the same areas each week and are able to get to know the children and families in that area through the worship and weekly visitation. It is through this extended time with families that volunteers are made aware of extended ministry opportunities that their team can act on.
Another instrumental part of this ministry is Prayer. Prayer requests are taken from the faith community each week and a prayer team prays daily over the requests. This team ranges from homebound and disabled persons to an international community of prayer warriors.
