“Evil. The very word has the power to conjure up a sense of threat and make us stop and wonder. Why is there evil? What is it exactly? Where does it come from? Can it be defeated?” The Wesley Ministry Network, affiliated with Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C., has released a new Adult Education DVD series designed to encourage discussion and reflection about such daunting questions. Hosted by retired United Methodist Bishop Kenneth Carder, Serious Answers to Hard Questions includes the interviews with and teachings of 10 Christian and Jewish theologians, including the world-class scientist and priest Reverend John Polkinghorne, and Dr. Richard B. Hays, the well-known Biblical scholar and Professor at Duke Divinity School. By employing 10 sessions of video instruction, this course promotes the Network’s vision “to bring the world’s best theological education to your local church.” This unique program grants access to the teachings of world experts who can provide meaningful answers about the conflicts between science and religion, understanding and withstanding evil, the sins of the Church, and other difficult questions.
Serious Answers to Hard Questions is the latest effort of Wesley Theological Seminary to encourage professional theologians to assume responsibility for educating the believers and seekers of the United Methodist Church. Dr. Craig C. Hill, Professor of New Testament and the Director for the Wesley Ministry Network welcomes viewers with this message, “What our speakers provide are serious answers, not pat or simple answers. Their perspectives are representative of the rest of mainstream theological scholarship, and their insights are both important and enriching.” The Wesley Ministry Network has previously released 4 other video series, each with wide circulation, not only in the United States but in many other countries.
